So the cliffs of Yosemite drove us out. Brian was barely sleeping, and would spend most of his awake time on the lowest floor of the house where he felt most stable. When we saw a sign saying San Francisco was only 140 miles away, the 2 1/2 hours to get there seemed no longer than our 2-3 hours through the park, and Brian's always loved that city, so we took off Thursday morning for the coast! There were still a lot of windy roads getting out of Groveland, and that coupled with all of the city traffic nearly doubled our trip time!, but we made it first to China Town, watched fortune cookies folded (with free samples), bought some delicious fresh giant cherries and cheap T-shirts, ate lunch at sit-down restaurant, and then had a quick look at Pier 49 and Alcatraz before we got stuck in even MORE traffic on the way home. I wanted to cry (or probably, I did) at the ridiculous amount of driving, when we had the whole way home to drive the next day. (After spending SO many hours for so many weeks prepping for this trip, it seemed impossible for it to be going so awry!, and it seemed such a sad wasted for all that effort and expense for our ONE family vacation of the year!). Again, though, everyone looked for the good, and even Brent said, "At least the pictures make it look like we had fun!" Once I realized our hikes were not materializing, I got out and jogged in the morning on these killer hills, and LOVED watching the sunrise in those mountains. It really is a beautiful spot, and we saw TONS of deer roaming around the house and neighborhood. A few unplanned disappointments, but lots of amazing moments as well! We left Friday morning after cleaning/packing things up, but once dark hit, and there were still miles and miles of dark desolate roads, Brian suggested getting a motel room for a night--we found a deal for a family-space--two rooms opened to each other, feasted on Little Caesar's and Ducky Dynasty, and finished the last few hours Saturday morning, grateful we hadn't pushed too far! Nice to be home, and lots of beautiful memories!--Ahhh, family vacations!!
