Interesting Independence Day

For the 4th of July, we got up and caught the Honeyville parade... ummm, it was close, it wasn't crowded, and they threw candy!-requirements fulfilled, I guess! We drove straight from there into Logan canyon to hike Crimson trail, where 3 of our crew promptly gave out:  Brent wanted to save energy to play basketball later, Brian was out of breath, and Maddie had left her tennis shoes by the door...at home.. and sandals weren't proving helpful.  Spencer backtracked to check on Dad at one point, telling him we would just go up a little ways--for about half a mile or so, and then came back to join us.  Somehow though, the message that Brian got, and what was in my head didn't quite match up, and I thought he had said he'd be fine waiting below in the camp area for as long as we wanted.  (and of course we had no phone service!).  So up we hiked until the switchbacks gave way to stellar views and a more level trail.  After what had to've been over an hour, we felt like the trail that I had read to be a loop was NOT circling back in any way, so we were debating whether to head back or not, trying to guess which would be the quickest route.  We did finally turn around, and shortly ran into other hikers, who confirmed that it was INDEED a loop which connected at the bottom of the mountain, following the river back to the campground.  That was welcome news, so we turned around again, and kept going, this time nearly sitting down because of the steep narrow declines and our wearying legs!! It was absolutely gorgeous all around! We were so relieved to finally make it to the river trail portion and make it back, feeling QUITE accomplished having completed this 5 mile trek, only to reunite with a rather impatient and disgruntled (if not somewhat panicky) half of the family who wondered what in the world could've happened to us in half a mile!! Basketball plans with friends were ruined, our success was deflated, so we all went home to grill for a well-earned meal, and then we shared our flag dessert with neighbors in a block firework shebang :).
